About this Position:
The Web Marketing and Communications Officer plays a vital role in the communications function for Bethlehem University in the Holy Land. Based in Bethlehem, Palestine, this person will be a member of a small (three-person) Communications Office, which is a part of the Bethlehem University Advancement Office. Additionally, the Web Marketing and Communications Officer works in close coordination with the Bethlehem University Computer Center, which responds to the technological needs of the University.
Bethlehem University contracted with Blackbaud to redesign its website and implement Blackbaud NetCommunity, which launched in August 2012. The Web Marketing and Communications Officer serves as one of the contacts in working with staff and with Blackbaud to maintain this website (mostly in English, Arabic, and some German parts, and other languages in the future).
The Web Marketing and Communications Officer coordinates and develops new electronic communications vehicles; provides ongoing web trainings for staff as needed; and designs and implements web procedures and best practices to take Bethlehem University’s global web presence to the next level. The Web Marketing and Communications Officer ensures that the website is current, fresh, informative, accurate, and engaging; and that additional tools and new features are developed and help achieve Bethlehem University’s academic, administrative, communications, and advancement needs and goals.
Primary Responsibilities:
Edit all homepage images (for slideshow), and format text with image (sometimes requiring for in-depth photo editing).
Edit 100 percent of all web content by content authors. This includes correcting mistakes as well as modifying content to make it more engaging and effective, particularly for our donors (the majority of whom are in North America).
Conduct web audits for each department/faculty once per year. This is an ongoing and huge priority.
Each month or so, the webmaster should work with faculty to review their existing web pages. The webmaster will present suggestions on how to modify and update their content in a compelling, donor-centric way. An existing knowledge of persuasive communications is crucial, as is incredibly strong and flawless writing.
Co-Lead the Web Committee with regular meetings and in-between tasks. Identify Web Committee Working Groups as needed. Select a person to lead the working group, and serve as a consistent resource for the Working Groups as they are tasked with various initiatives.
Ensure that the activities of the Web Committee are representative of the needs of the larger University, and communicate the activities of the Web Committee to the larger University community.
Communicate other web developments to the larger University community, mostly through the Weekly Bulletin.
Review all submitted website updates from content authors. Edit as needed, ensuring proper grammar and punctuation, correct formatting (per the style sheet), working links, and engaging/effective content. Regularly maintain this section, so submitted changes are approved or denied in a timely manner.
Create appealing, tasteful, and engaging graphics for electronic use, as needed.
Once BBNC functions are restored, format BU Happenings. Configure mailing of BU Happenings with correct settings and queries, and send.
Monitor web statistics. Use analytics to create and implement creative marketing strategies to increase web traffic and maximize our online presence.
Ensure a cohesive online presence among all of Bethlehem University’s online portals: the website, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, etc.
Stay abreast of industry-wide best practices for marketing communications, particularly for online communications.
Work closely with Development staff to ensure that current messaging of donor outreach is consistent with our online messaging (and vice versa). Use communications best practices and exceptional writing abilities to produce the most effective copy possible.
Serve as a n “project manager” for the website, keeping track of any and all questions, and the status for the solutions.
Ensure that all content on Flickr is appropriate for public use and organized using sets, tags, descriptions, etc.
Ensure that no copyright violations are broken with uploaded content on the website, such as written materials, videos, photos, etc.
Secondary Responsibilities:
The Web Marketing and Communications Officer will participate in and proactively schedule regular Skype, telephone, and email correspondence with Bethlehem University officials and staff (especially the Web Committee, Computer Center, Advancement Office staff, and Content Authors) located in Washington DC and in Bethlehem, Palestine. Additionally, s/he will help develop strategic plan with metrics, and proactively seek out opportunities for enhancement and promotion of the Bethlehem University website.
Special Working Conditions:
Availability via mobile phone and email beyond regular work hours for emergency situations is required. In order to accommodate the multiple-hour time difference between Bethlehem, Palestine and Washington, DC, flexibility in working hours is required so that meetings between both locations can happen in a timely manner.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate will possess the following skills, qualifications, and attributes:
BA Degree in any field
Minimum of five years of experience managing organizational websites, e-communications, designing for web, and complex project management
Knowledge of fundamental marketing principles and practices as normally acquired through a Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or other related field of study;
Demonstrated success in developing plans and executing web strategies. Track record as a creative and strategic thinker;
Experience with online marketing – engaging, motivating, and driving readers to action;
Working knowledge of copywriting and editing principles associated with the production of promotional pieces. Excellent writing, proofreading, and editing skills required;
Must be able to effectively lead, communicate and collaborate with diverse constituencies with varying levels of technical knowledge; must possess effective analytical, interpersonal, organizational, team-building, and team-leading skills;
Strong oral and written communication skills in both the Arabic and English languages are required
Significant successful experience in higher education or multi-disciplinary non-profit organizations, and capacity to maintain poise and work effectively under pressure;
The ability to work successfully on multiple time-sensitive projects across time zone differences and with persons of different cultures; and the ability to quickly adapt to and exercise leadership in different cultures and with different business practices;
Experience with website content management systems; experience with Blackbaud NetCommunity and Raiser’s Edge highly desired; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and understanding of HTML and CSS desired.
